Privacy Policy
Last updated: 27 September 2026
Building Surveyor Salary Index ("we", "us", "our") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and your rights.
If you have any questions or requests about this Privacy Policy or your data, contact us at contact@buildingsurveyorsalary.com.
1. Scope
This policy applies to the Building Surveyor Salary Index website, including:
- The public salary browsing and statistics pages
- The salary submission form
- The career guides and resource pages
- The admin moderation area
2. Information we collect
A. Information you submit in salary contributions
When you submit a salary record, we collect the fields you provide, including:
- Role details: seniority, years of experience, specialism and professional memberships (including the name you type if you choose "Other")
- Where you work: country, region, employer type and work arrangement
- Pay details: base salary range and currency, and optionally bonus band, car or car allowance, and other benefits
- For Australia only: your state registration level and whether you sign off building permits or certificates
If you choose "Other" for a membership, please only enter the institution and grade, not personal contact details or your employer's name.
B. Security and anti-abuse information
To protect the service from spam and abuse, we use Cloudflare Turnstile. As part of this verification flow, Turnstile data (including token validation signals and IP-related information) may be processed by Cloudflare.
We also create technical request metadata on our API (such as request IDs and server logs) to diagnose errors and keep the service secure and reliable.
C. Information stored in your browser
We use browser local storage for product functionality: your light/dark theme, a country you choose to view, and an unfinished salary form so you do not lose your progress (it is cleared when you submit). This information stays on your device.
We do not use these local storage entries for behavioural advertising.
D. Approximate location
To show salaries for your country first, the site asks Cloudflare, which hosts it, for the country your connection comes from (for example "GB"), falling back to your device's time zone. Only the country code is used, it is not stored or sent to us, and you can switch to any other country or all countries at any time. If you choose a country yourself, that choice is remembered in your browser.
E. Visit statistics
We use Cloudflare Web Analytics to count visits to each page, so we can see which pages and tools are useful. It records details such as the page viewed, the site that linked to it, the country and the type of browser, and we only see these as totals. It does not use cookies or store anything on your device, and it does not identify or track individual visitors.
3. How we use information
We use information to:
- Accept, validate, and moderate salary submissions
- Publish approved salary records and aggregated insights
- Apply privacy protections, such as checking the "Other" membership name for identifying details
- Operate admin moderation workflows, including notifying the moderator of new submissions
- Count visits to each page, in total, to see which pages and tools are useful
- Prevent spam and abuse
- Maintain security, monitor performance, and troubleshoot issues
4. Publication and anonymisation
Approved records may be published on the public site.
To reduce re-identification risk:
- Submissions are intended to be anonymous; we do not ask for your name, email address, employer or city
- Salaries are collected and shown as ranges rather than exact figures
- The "Other" membership name is only seen by the moderator and is never published
- Australian registration answers are never shown on individual records; they only appear in grouped statistics, and groups of fewer than 5 salaries show no figures
- Headline salary statistics are only shown once at least 5 salaries are available
5. Legal bases (UK/EU users)
Where UK GDPR/EU GDPR applies, we generally rely on:
- Legitimate interests: operating and improving the salary index, fraud prevention, and service security
- Consent: where you choose to submit information to us
- Legal obligations: where we must comply with applicable law
6. How we share information
We may share information with trusted processors that provide our infrastructure and moderation tools:
- Cloudflare (hosting/security services, including Turnstile and Web Analytics)
- Google Firebase (Cloud Functions, Firestore, Authentication)
- Telegram (the moderator receives a message with the details of each new submission so it can be reviewed)
We may also disclose information if required by law, regulation, legal process, or to protect rights, safety, and security.
We do not sell personal information.
Affiliate links. Some pages link to Amazon as part of the Amazon Associates programme, and the site earns a small commission on qualifying purchases. We do not send any of your information to Amazon. If you follow one of these links, Amazon can tell that you came from this site, and Amazon's own privacy notice and cookies apply on its website.
7. International data transfers
Our service providers may process data in countries outside your own. Where required, we use appropriate safeguards for cross-border transfers under applicable data protection laws.
8. Data retention
We retain data only as long as needed for the purposes above. Current automated retention windows include:
- Pending submissions: removed after approximately 90 days
- Rejected, flagged, or withdrawn submissions: removed after approximately 180 days
Approved live records may be retained longer to operate the index, unless removed through moderation or legal requirements.
9. Security
We use technical safeguards designed to protect data.
No system is completely secure, but we work to protect information in line with industry practices.
10. Your rights and choices
Depending on your location, you may have rights to:
- Request access to personal data we hold about you
- Request correction or deletion of personal data
- Object to or restrict certain processing
- Request data portability
- Lodge a complaint with your data protection regulator
To exercise rights, email contact@buildingsurveyorsalary.com.
11. Children's privacy
This website is not directed to children. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children.
12. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The "Last updated" date at the top will show when changes take effect.
